In October and November 2021 Women in Danish Architecture held for the second time a PhD course titled ”Architecture, Landscape and Gender: Rethinking Theory, Methodology and Practice.” Twenty-one PhD students from around the world and from different faculties and areas of specialization participated. The course took place at the University of Copenhagen with workshops, knowledge sharing, communal dining, and presentations by Ning de Coninck-Smith, Henriette Steiner, Svava Riesto and Anja Baumhoff

The PhD course was planned as a slideshow-free zone with an emphasis on dialogue, through which everyone contributed with their subject knowledge.

In preparation for the PhD course, every participant had to submit a scholarly text that had special significance for their work, which had to do with gender and architecture. In addition, all PhD students were offered a conversation with a mentor.

After the course ended, we have received several positive feedbacks from PhD students who participated in 2020 and 2021.

One of the participants was Sean Thomas Tyler, who is a PhD student at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Estonian Academy of Art. Sean emphasizes that the PhD course made him aware of his own situation and position and how this awareness benefits the research and writing.

Ph.D. student at DTU, Gulin Goksu Basaran complements Sean Thomas Tyler and emphasizes the importance of a collaboration and good network of people who can inspire and care.

The course was a success and the exchange of findings and discussions about gender and architecture enriched the discussions.

The University of Copenhagen SCIENCE has decided to offer the course again in the autumn of 2022. Read more about the course here.
