In November 2022, Svava Riesto and Henriette Steiner organised the third international PhD course Architecture, Landscape and Gender: Rethinking Theory, Methodology and Practice.

Testimonials:

“I want to thank you for having me on your course, empowering me, and for all the facilitation you offered to enable me to attend these nourishing and inspiring days. I have learned a lot through the course, directly and indirectly. You introduced me to a diverse, knowledgeable experience that I am truly thankful for this year!”

Course participant Nourhan Bassam, PhD candidate, Cairo

“What a great group of students – it was wonderful to hear their thoughtful and probing questions. You clearly have created a special environment where they feel safe to express their doubts and aspirations.”

Guest teacher Mary McLeod, Professor, Columbia University

Issues of gender are increasingly prevalent in scientific and political movements related to diversity, inclusive learning and research environments. Gender perspectives are becoming essential in research on architecture, landscapes and cities, and more and more scholars are exploring questions about gender in relation to architecture. Some of these questions concern hitherto overlooked women in the history of architecture; others refer to historiographical frameworks that remain predominantly concerned with the creation of male hero figures. These issues are just a few of many, and they provided fertile ground for this PhD course.

The main part of the course was a PowerPoint-free zone, based on dialogical workshops where everyone contributed their own special expertise. In preparation for the course, each participant was asked to send us a scientific article that had been particularly important for their work. We then discussed these articles during the course plenaries. PhD students from all over the world participated, and the course took place at the University of Copenhagen with workshops, knowledge-sharing, communal dining, and presentations from international researchers on gender and architecture.
